Ambient, task, accent, decorative — in that order, and never all on the same circuit. A worked example from a 3BHK in Bandra.
The single most common flaw in residential lighting is grouping ceiling downlights into a single massive on/off circuit. When you turn on everything at 100%, the space feels flat and institutional.
The Four Distinct Lighting Layers
1. Ambient (Cove & Indirect): Provides general low-glare vertical illuminance by bouncing light off matte ceiling slabs.
2. Accent (Micro Spotlights): Focuses at 30° angles onto art pieces, textured stonework, and dining table centerpieces with sharp 15°–24° beams.
3. Task (Under-cabinet & Vanity): Puts 350+ lux directly onto cooking counters, study desks, and dressing mirrors without casting occupant shadows.
4. Decorative (Pendants & Sconces): The 'jewellery' that creates visual anchor points at human eye level.
